Smooth Talker...

Lips, we use them for everything... well most things, like eating and speaking. Apart from the obvious, I find lips to be an attractive part of our facial features, especially as part of our beauty routine. We often  dress up our lips in various shades, to compliment our entire make up look and to create an overall enhanced effect. For instance, take a red lipstick and apply it to your lips, notice how you did not have to apply a whole face of cosmetic products and you still look beautiful. That is the power of lips... Well that and the colour red... or pink... or any other colour for that matter.

Alas, no matter how often we try to maintain our beauty regimes, we often find problem areas. I'm talking dry lips! Ever felt that dry irritable sensation on your lips and no matter how much salve of lip balm you apply, they do not help soothe or soften your lips?

This is that eureka moment you have been anticipating. I stumbled upon this old trick, which I have been using for a few good years, it works every single time. Follow the below steps and unleash that smooth talker within you.

Method:
  • You will find it much easier if you moisturize your lips prior, with a lip balm, then brush away at the dry problem bits.
  • Dampen your toothbrush and gently brush your lips.
  • Do not brush as roughly; there is a risk of your lips bleeding or becoming sore afterwards.
  • Applying a soothing lip balm after the process, helps keeps the lips soft and locks in moisture.
  • Repeat the above steps whenever you experience any dry and flaky sensation on your lips.

Now you're a smooth talker, go on and try all those lovely shades of lipstick.

Disclaimer: the methods above are familiar with some people and may slightly differ. The tips I have mentioned are subjective to my experience and proved to be helpful. You may find alternative methods, to suit your needs.

The Mac Is Back.

I remember purchasing my first mac (also known as the trench coat). I had been searching for the perfect one for years and often found it difficult. Some were too long, too short, the material was not suitable, or the shade was not appealing- I can be quite picky. After all the searching, I found my perfect match. I was shopping in Zara one weekend and there it was, hanging on the rails, the prefect shade of beige, calling my name. This was the first mac I had seen in years, which ticked all the right boxes. Not only that, the style was Gucci inspired, minus the price tag. Ever since, I have been making great use of my mac and wear it when the weather is cool or during the rainy days.

Macs are timeless wardrobe staples, when I think of a beige mac, I am instantly reminded of Audrey Hepburn’s role as ‘Holly Golightly’, in the classic ‘Breakfast at Tiffanies’- the scene is which she shares a kiss in the rain, with Geroge Peppard. I feel everyone should own at least one mac if not more. Beige macs are my favourite, they are very versatile and can be styled for an all year round experience, even in the summer period. Teaming a mac with some black skin-tight jeans, a pretty top and some heeled boots is trendy for a casual day. If you are attending a formal meeting, choosing to team your mac with a dress and some heels gives off a professional yet stylish feel. Virtually any outfit will compliment the mac, be it a dress, skirt or jeans etc. handbags of all sizes compliment the mac and most will do just fine. I prefer my bags on the larger side, a girl can never have too many things to carry.

Happy Health...

The New Year is the ideal time when we decide to make resolutions, in the hope of achieving them. Common resolutions many people make are to lose weight and lead a healthy lifestyle.  Unfortunately this does not always go to plan and we pick up healthier eating habits later in the year. Some people are encouraged to be healthier prior to the summer season, a reason to look good on the beach or during vacation. For many it may be an all year round goal, to loose and maintain a healthy weight.

I personally do not believe in diets or quick fixes, they may work, but I see being healthy as a lifestyle choice and not just for a month or two. Eating healthily does not appeal to many people. To some, it may simply outline the words ‘restriction’ or ‘deprivation’. From personal experience, I can assure you this is not the case. Once you have mastered balance and grasped the concept of ‘everything in moderation’ with an effective exercise plan, you may be well on your way to a healthier you.

Miracles do not occur overnight. It may take weeks or months, varying from person to person, to loose weight. Striving towards a goal and keeping a mental image, of what you imagine your future self to look like, is an excellent motivator. A rigorous exercise plan and low calorie intake are two things I swear by. You probably have heard from alternative sources, the similar theories behind loosing weight. Nonetheless, we all have our personal health techniques, which we adjust to our needs and they work for us.

By changing your attitude and approach on how your perceive healthy eating is a start. Pushing forwards to maintain a healthy balanced diet, with regular exercise will work to your benefit. I will share some tips that I find helpful. They may or may not be suitable for you. The most important thing before changing your eating patterns or switching to a healthier diet, is to speak with your GP, or health consultant, they may be more familiar with your needs and requirements and could set out a healthy diet plan, catering to your needs.

  • Consuming less carbs- white bread, pasta, and rice- if you find carbs to be something difficult to give up, try opting for wholegrain options.
  • Porridge is a super food and a perfect way to start your day- keeping you fuller for longer.
  •  Consuming more fruits- I find these to beat any sweet tooth cravings I have. A few favourites of mine include; bananas, raspberries, strawberries, peach and apples.
  •  Stacking your plate with vegetables and protein foods.
  •  Consuming protein foods such as eggs, fish and grilled chicken, give you the energy you require and are excellent for healthier skin, hair and nails.
  • Avoiding sugary foods and beverages.
  • Aiming to drink at least 1/2 litres of water, per day.
  • Dining in restaurants should not be a nightmare; there will always be healthy options, which are not as heavy, such as salad dishes, chicken, fish steaks… etc.
  • Treat yourself, in moderation- deprivation will only make your cravings stronger- popcorn or dark chocolate are always healthy treat options.
  • Plan your meals, starting off with a generous breakfast- your meal portions should decrease in size, throughout the day.
  • Hold off from consuming any food 4/5 hours before bed.
  • Burn it off. Join a gym, pair up with a buddy and go for jogs.
  •  Try aiming to work out for at least 2 hours per day, for  4/5 days a week- this will tone up any loose ends.
  •  If you find exercise difficult to fit into your schedule, walking to places, catching the stairs as opposed to elevators are always beneficial.
  •  Keep a diary and making notes of any achievements you have made are excellent motivating factors.
  • Enjoy you health and success… dig into that bowl of fruits. Go wild.  J

Disclaimer: the advice above may or may not work for you. The tips I have mentioned are subjective; they helped me lead a healthier lifestyle. I cannot guarantee they will work miracles. I can only hope they will work for you. I wish you the best of luck.

Algarve it is...

I spent a week in Algarve (Portugal). This was my first journey to a European country. I enjoy travelling; the whole experiencing new cultures as well as the history and meeting people, brings me a thrill. I enjoy city life and all the tourist activities one would find abroad.

However, my time in Portugal was slightly different to my usual travelling experiences. The main reason being, this was a totally ‘chilled out’ vacation. For the duration of my week, I lounged about the poolside, frolicked on the beach- which I might add was literally 5 minutes from my accommodation, I ate cheese omelettes with fries and not forgetting the fish and chips. Could my vacation get any better?

I did not get the opportunity for sight seeing and there were no iconic landmarks, which I could visit. My vacation promoted the relaxed, seaside feel and my time was taken up by the poolside.

If you are the type of person who enjoys travelling to places, which promote the relaxing factor; lounging by the sun-beds and soaking up the sun, well I think you may have found your next destination…

For those who are more tuned into city breaks and exploring, Algarve may not be as appealing and you may find other cities in Portugal, to be well accustomed to your exploring needs. But remember that saying… ‘Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it’, well the best of both worlds seems a good way to go... you may find you enjoy seaside vacations.  J

Summer Scents.

Summer time is the best time, most would agree. It is the season we experiment, not only with our wardrobe, but also with our beauty products. As we put all our focus into fashion and skin products, we often ignore the switch in perfumes- this is not compulsory for most. I feel changing up my scents every now and then according to seasons, lifts my mood and creates a mellow feel.

Calvin Klein Euphoria- eau de parfum
Chloe Love- eau de parfum
Chloe- eau de parfum
Dior J'adore- eau de parfum

I recently prepared my summer scents and narrowed down to my favourite four, which I alternate on certain days. I use these perfumes on areas surrounding my pulse; the neck, the wrist and a few spritzes on my hair- this makes the scent linger for hours. When purchasing my scents, I ensure I opt for the ‘eau de parfum’ as it is less concentrated and holds much more lasting power, in comparison to the ‘eau de toilette'. So when you are out on your next shopping trip, be sure to opt for the 'eau deparfum' and you will be smelling like a billion dollars, or pounds, maybe even euros… J

The Last Bite...

It all started when I was in my early teens, when I first began biting my nails. At the time I did not think much of it, but how it affected me in later years caught up with me. A case of bad nail conditions and infections, helped put a stop to chewing my nails. Looking back, the thought of it, makes my stomach churn.

A friend of mine, who suffers from the same problem reached out to me, asking for some advice, on ‘how to stop biting your nails’. My first response to her was “try dipping your fingers in vinegar,” of course I was kidding.  On a serious note, I instantly related to her problem as my past sprung to the present. The main reason I am typing this post, is to hope that she will read this and it may help her overcome her nail biting habits. If you are reading my post and suffer from the same condition, I hope my post proves to be useful. If I can do it, so can you!

There are many reasons why we feel the need to bite our nails; at times this is a natural reaction, without giving much thought in what we are actually doing. The first and most common is the result of nervousness, followed by boredom, worries, and stress. Of course some people have a disorder, which is the cause of excessive nail biting.

I fall into the boredom, nervous and stress categories. My early teenage years were not plain sailing and for me biting my nails was the equivalent of a therapy session- as queer as that sounds. Surrounded by elder sisters and friends with pretty nails, I would imagine when I would grow a set of my own lovely nails, which I could decorate, with every shade of nail polish available. For me, this was a great motivator- well that and the hideous look of my fingers. Soon after I was on the road to recovery, in a couple of months my nails looked normal again, although I detected the changes in the initial weeks.

I have many tips which I will share, on putting an end to nail biting. The first and foremost crucial thing is self-control, master this and everything else will run smoothly. Below I have listed a few tips I found helped me. Follow all, or certain steps and you are on your way to having lovely luscious nails… when you finally do, go wild and paint them in pretty shades. Rock out.

A before and after picture of my nail.
Tips and tricks:
  •  If at fist it is proving difficult, try protecting one nail at a time. By doing this, your nails and their appearance will improve. Repeat each step with the following nails, until you have stopped nibbling altogether.
  • Place adhesive bandages on your nails, to stop you from biting them.
  • Keep yourself occupied, boredom is a result of nail biting and this could lead to an obsession.
  • Using an image for inspiration may help.
  • Using nail growth treatments may boost fresh nails forming, thus improving their appearance.
  • Using specifically formulated nail polishes may prevent you from biting your nails.
  • Wearing false nails may prove helpful.
  • Maintaining a healthy diet may promote healthy nail growth.
  • Regularly washing your hands and using moisturising creams as well as cuticle oil, will promote nail growth.
  • Finally… celebrate your nail success.

A disclaimer I want to bring to your attention is, that there may be alternative methods out there, which help prevent nail biting. The tips I have mentioned are subjective (from my personal experiences), they helped me overcome my nail biting. I can only hope they will work for you.

I wish my friend and all of you nail biters out there, the best of luck.

City Stroll...

This weekend has been a hectic one. But I have enjoyed it thoroughly. Mainly because I was out in the city, shopping and the weather was pleasant, finally!

I usually shun public transport when travelling to places, which are within walking distance, as I prefer walking. The latter is ideal, especially if crossing areas with amazing scenery. Not only does it make for awesome images, it keeps you fit.

Today I felt the urge to capture a few moments on my way to the city. My outfit for the day was très chique. A perfect crisp white shirt with a tweed jacket, teamed with black jeans. This classic look never fails and can be worn for many occasions; be it shopping, at work or catching up with friends. The look can be glamorized by adopting a pair of heels. I opted for boots as walking was heavily involved in my itinerary... I still managed to nail the trendy look.  J
